The medicine Ultram is a pain reliever like narcotic one, which is used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain when treatment is needed around the clock.
Tramadol is a man-made (synthetic) analgesic (pain reliever). Its exact mechanism of action is unknown but similar morphine. Tramadol is not a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) and does not have the increased risk of stomach ulceration and internal bleeding that can occur with NSAIDs.
Ultram dosing:
The recommended dose of tramadol is 50-100 mg (immediate release tablets) every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. The maximum dose is 400 mg/day. To improve tolerance patients should be started at 25 mg/day, and doses may be increased by 25 mg every 3 days to reach 100 mg/day (25 mg 4 times daily). Thereafter, doses can be increased by 50 mg every 3 days to reach 200 mg day (50 mg 4 times daily). Tramadol may be taken with or without food with full glass of water.
Extended release tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.
In case you have missed the dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
In case you have overdose, seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine, as Ultram overdose can be fatal with such symptoms as, drowsiness, shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, extreme weakness, cold or clammy skin, feeling light-headed, fainting, or coma.

There are possible side effects of Ultram:

  • an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;
  • a red, blistering, peeling skin rash;
  • shallow breathing, weak pulse;
  • dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;
  • nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite;
  • blurred vision;
  • flushing (redness, warmth, or tingly feeling);
  • sleep problems (insomnia).

The other side effects may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Remember! You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Ultram, as it may cause a dangerous decrease in your breathing when used together with Ultram; avoid using drugs that make you sleepy (such as cold medicine, other pain medications, muscle relaxants, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). These drugs may slow your breathing or increase drowsiness when used together with Ultram.
Such medicine as Tramadol can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
